Adventure narrator: HomePod Bob

Book 1 — Building, helping and caring. Meet Bob: a builder with busy hands, a listening ear and a kind heart.

Bob begins with a plan and checks his measurements. He works with his team to put the pod together, fit the windows and finish the rooms. A pod may be a home, a garden room or a place to work. Bob thinks about the person who will use it and wants them to feel welcome.

A bungalow has its main rooms on one level. Bob reads the plans, prepares his work and helps the team build each part. Everyone has a job to do. Bob asks questions and checks the details, because a comfortable home takes care, patience and teamwork.

Sometimes a family needs more space in the home they already love. Bob listens to their ideas before work begins. An extension adds a new part to the house. Bob and the team work carefully so that the new space joins the old and suits the people who live there.

Brick slips are thin pieces that give a wall a brick finish. Bob prepares the surface and fits the Terrix brick slips carefully, keeping the rows neat. He checks the little details as he goes. A tidy finish takes patience, and Bob feels proud when the wall is ready.

Inside the building, Bob protects the surrounding surfaces and puts on his protective equipment. He uses a Graco machine to spray Terrix plaster onto the prepared wall, then works on the finish. The rough-looking wall becomes smooth. Bob knows that getting ready properly is part of doing a good job.

Outside, Bob is giving the wall its render finish. He protects the windows and the ground, then uses his Graco machine to apply Terrix render to the prepared surface. He finishes the surface carefully and checks his work. Every stage matters, from the preparation to the final tidy-up.

It is time to bring colour to the room. Bob covers the places that must stay paint-free and wears his protective equipment. His Graco paint sprayer helps him apply Terrix paint across the prepared wall. He takes his time and checks the finish. Soon the room feels fresh and welcoming.

Today Bob has a different machine to use: the hoover! His wife is enjoying a cup of tea on the settee while he tackles the crumbs. He reaches into the corners and under the furniture. Then he picks up his tools. “Back to the proper job!” he jokes. Looking after a home is something everyone can share.

Even Bob cannot work all the time. He packs his bag, finds his sunglasses and heads off for a holiday. There is time to explore, enjoy the sunshine and put his feet up. Rest helps Bob feel ready for new adventures. Doing a good job also means making time to enjoy life.

Social values are the ways we care about people and the world around us. For Bob, that means listening, treating people fairly and helping where he can. Everyone is equal. Everyone deserves respect and a chance to take part. Bob tries to show these beliefs through the things he does each day.

Bob puts down what he is doing and gives someone his attention. He lets them finish speaking and asks what would help. He does not assume that he knows the answer. Sometimes being heard makes a difficult day a little easier. “Your feelings matter,” says Bob. Listening is one way to show kindness.

A safe home is somewhere a person can rest without being frightened. Bob listens to women and children who need a safe haven. He works alongside support workers, who can help families find the right support. He respects their privacy and their choices. Everyone deserves to be treated with care and dignity.

Girls and boys, women and men deserve equal respect and opportunities. People have different interests, abilities and needs, and everyone’s ideas matter. Bob makes room for people to join in and asks what would help them take part. Being fair can mean giving someone extra support so they have a real chance.

Bob meets someone who does not have a settled home. He speaks kindly and listens to their story without judging. “What would help?” he asks. Together with support workers, he looks for ways to help. Every person has a name, a story and hopes for the future. Everyone deserves respect.

No one should hurt or frighten a child. If something makes you feel unsafe, tell a trusted grown-up, such as a teacher. If they do not help, keep telling another trusted grown-up until someone does. It is never your fault. Bob listens and asks the right people to help. Children do not have to solve grown-up problems.

Bob talks with communities, councils and landowners about places where a HomePod could be useful. Some places might suit an individual pod; others might suit a small village. The team must check that the land is suitable and get the permissions needed. Bob keeps listening to the people who may live there and their neighbours.

We do not all find the same things easy at school. Some enjoy maths; others love making, drawing, music or caring for people. Not everyone will use Pythagoras’ theorem in their work, and times tables can take practice. Keep learning and exploring. Your marks do not decide your worth.

Who could we listen to? What would make someone feel welcome? How can we make sure everyone gets a turn? What would you like to try, just because it interests you? What do you enjoy doing, even while you are still learning? Bob’s promise: “I will listen, be fair and help where I can.” For grown-ups: These picture stories are for shared reading and discussion.
